Jozsef Balogh (Hungary Budapest)
Naoko Ishibashi (Piano;Japan) |
1.Music from Szek / Gulyas-Balogh
2. Brazilliance / Gordon
Lewin
3. Concerto for Clarinet - 3.Movement, A
La Creole / Jim Parker
4. Brahms goes to Budapest / J. Balogh |
 |
1.Music from Szek / Laszlo Gulyas(1928-1995)
Szek is a district in Transylvania, today
part of Romania, but until 1921 a part of
the Kingdom of Hungary. Each district has
its own musical practices. This is dance
music originally written for bass, viola
and violin, which has been reduced to piano
and clarinet. This is also chardash or pub
music that carries a rhythmic tension between
duple in the clarinet and triple or a swung
feel in the piano.
2. Brazilliance / Gordon Lewin(1925-2008)
This samba, with its pushing
two-beats rhythm,
contains jazz influenced
phraseology.
3. Concerto for Clarinet - 3.Movement, A
La Creole / Jim Parke(1934〜)
Jim Parker is a full time composer of works
for the concert hall, the stage, film &
television. How about the Jim Parker concerto?
- exactly the scoring you want, written in
the 90's and you do not say what kind of
audience you expect but very approachable
for a middle-of-the road crowd who may no
know much clarinet music or 20th century
music. It's jazz-influenced in part and also
inspired by three poems having been commissioned
by London Underground's "Poems on the
Underground"
4. Brahms goes to Budapest (2006)/ J. Balogh(1956〜)
This piece based on Brahms' Hungarian Dance
no. 5 was also inspired by the story of Brahms
and his good friend Jozsef Joachim who was
a Jewish violinist. They met in a sailor's
pub where Brahms played the piano. They played
sonatas together and improvised on famous
Hungarian lieds (songs). Brahms' Hungarian
Dances was arranged for four hands on the
piano. Balogh brings a sense of parody to
this piece through referencing various contrasting
styles. |
